Day 54: Bergen to Oslo

(This is for Monday 20 October)

Sadly, as soon as we woke up on Monday we had to turn around and head right back to Oslo. We got up early enough to be packed by the time we headed to the 7.00 am breakfast, which consisted of fish and some odd Norwegian things. We had to leave quickly though to make our bus back to central Bergen. It was too bad that it was mostly dark still, so we really didn't get to see much of Bergen. I think that's the one thing I would have changed about break, but we did book the fjord tour after arranging flights so we didn't have as much time to stay in Bergen.

We got on the train back to Oslo at 7.58 and arrived around 2.30 pm or so. We walked around the city a bit and settled back into the hostel for a while and then headed out in search of an authentic (but cheap) Norwegian meal. One of the booklets at the hostel mentioned a smaller place that "most tourist guides would never dream of listing", or something to that extent, and so we figured it would be the perfect place to go to. It was actually on one of the main roads in the city but was upstairs from a more touristy looking restaurant. We headed upstairs and found a sweet place where I don't think a single person was under about 60 years old. Our waiter even described one of the dishes as "for old people". The first thing we saw walking in was this cute coat check:
From Fall Break - Norway

Love the handwritten numbers. Kelly and I split the "Beef Snack" which was beef, potatoes, and veggies. Such good, homey food... I also tried some fish someone else got and actually liked it! Cute place, good food.

After dinner we ended up going to this small bar/club/café called Mir that has live music on the weekends and airplane seats along with normal chairs. It was pretty cool and "hip" without any snobby hipster feel to it. There was a great selection of local beers I did not drink because (I'm not sure I've mentioned this yet, actually) I was on antibiotics throughout most of the trip, and the bartender was happy to recommend the cheapest one to us.

There weren't many people there, it being a Monday night, and we ended up playing some foosball even.

Anyway, it was a nice relaxing night to top off a travel day, and I was looking forward even more to the rest of break at this point.
